Can a heroin addict love someone?

Is anyone on here that is an ex addict please tell me what an addict means when they say love you or that they miss you. I'm a bit conflicted because their actions tell me something completely different.

When an addict tells you that they love you they mean it. I never once told some one that I love them and didn't mean it but my addiction was so strong that it pulled me in the opposite direction They mean it, as much as any of us mean it. But they are COMPELLED to feed their addiction, even when it goes against everything they want.

Although a heroin addict may sometimes say I love you just to gain something from it nine times out of 10 if they keep you in their life in general it's because you mean something to them. Well that's how I worked anyway, hope that helps.
