  5. How long does opiate withdrawal last?
Asked: 2018-09-01 16:41:42
Where do I even start? My mom was a hard-core heroin addict and shot up in front of me for most of my life. I didn’t think it was any big deal when I started using two. she died from an overdose last week and I think I finally got the wake-up call that I need to stop using. I want to go cold turkey but I’m afraid that the withdrawals are going to be too much. How long will I feel dope sick?

Heroin withdrawals are no joke. You’ll probably feel like you’ve had the worst flu of your life for that first week, and then you spend another week trying to recover from that. If you can make it through about two weeks, it’s important that you don’t try to use again. At least not the same amount that you were using when you stopped. Try going to Narcotics Anonymous and checking out the local programs.

This is tough. First of all, I’m sorry about your mom. Your best bet is to talk to a rehab and see if you can get into some sort of program. You may be able to get on methadone which is a good idea for someone who’s used heroin their whole life. Otherwise, the withdrawals are going to be pretty bad for about four or five days, and then they’ll start to slowly get better. You may still feel achy for about two weeks and after that you’ll just have to fight the cravings.
