After a surgery, my wife started using pain pills to ease some of the aching that she was experiencing. She has now been on the pills for a few months and doesn’t seem to be experiencing any pain, yet she is still using the pills. Is there a chance she could be addicted to them?

Opiates that are prescribed to relieve pain after a surgery or injury can be highly addictive. Talk to your wife to see if she would be willing to stop using the pills for a few hours to see how she feels. If she feels the urge to take the prescription after a few hours, but doesn’t notice any pain, her body has become addicted to the pills.

Someone who is addicted to pain pills will often take more of them throughout the day than their doctor prescribed them to take. A great way to tell if your wife has an addiction problem is to discreetly count the number of pills that are in the bottle before you leave for the day. When you get home, count the pills again. If she doesn’t know you are checking to see if she has been using them excessively, she won’t think to hide the fact that she is using a lot of pills. If you see that she has used far more than she is supposed to, it may be time to hold an intervention and get her help for her addiction.
