What is the meaning of addicted?

I’ve started volunteering at a homeless shelter and during my first day today, I saw some people in really bad shape. I’ve been told some of them are using drugs, are they in bad shape cos they are addicted or just cos they sleep rough?

Addiction is an illness and it can cause people to end up on the streets. Addiction means that they are dependent on something, whether that be drugs or alcohol and it causes many issues in someone’s life.
