Why are pain pills so addictive?

I wish I knew why pain pills are so addictive? I know my grandson keeps taking my pills because he’s addicted, but why?

Your grandson is probably trying to escape the real world. School or home life troubles can seem like the end of the world to a teenager and he is probably afraid to talk to anyone about it. Pain pills taken in excess will make him feel like none of this exists.
