  5. Why do people become addicted to painkillers?
Asked: 2018-04-27 14:44:27
I have a foster child who’s in her teens. I found a bunch of (what turned out to be) Vicodin in her room, and she tested positive for them. I’m trying hard to understand and not just to feel angry and betrayed. Why is she using them, is she addicted?

I can’t imagine trying to take on teenage foster kids. Just work with her case manager and try to understand that people use drugs for any number of reasons. Foster care usually comes after trauma or something bad. She could be using painkillers to try and feel better after everything or to try and fit in with other kids.

I’m so sorry, and kudos to you for opening your home to older foster kids. A lot of kids who come through the system have been through a lot of physical and mental trauma. They may turn to drugs in order to mask the pain or as a way to cope with everything that’s going on. Just try to get her into treatment and let her know that there’s both consequences and help available to her.
