I've been clean for a couple years now and I don't know what I'm doing wrong, but I'm depressed a lot and I had the first panic attack I've ever had in my entire life. Is it normal for this to happen? Is there anything I can do about it? Getting high always calmed me down, but I feel like that would create more problems than it solves.

Hi Walter, Yes it is very normal that you are feeling this way. There are a few reasons that this happens. First of all, you are getting used to actually feeling your emotions. When you were using, you always had the drugs to numb everything out. Now that you are not doing drugs, your body is adjusting. Simple things that people deal with every day to you will seem more extreme and may bring about anxiety and panic. What you can trust is, that this won't last for long. Eventually, your body will regulate itself and you will get used to handling these feelings. You might go into panic because you are not used to feeling extreme emotions. This is one of the things that can take people back out if they are not careful. Blessings

Life is still hard when you get clean - as you are obviously experiencing. Psychiatric care shouldn't ever be looked down upon.
