My pops is a heavy drinker, I believe he is a hope to die alcoholic. I worry about his brain and the effects alcohol has on it especially with his aging.

Alcohol-related brain damage is very real and has extreme potential. If one drinks to much with blackouts occuring regularly, the damage is mainly in memory but can be permanent and sometimes debilitating.

Yes, binge drinking alcohol can cause brain damage. If you search for brain scans of alcoholics online you can see what the damage looks like. But know that if you stop binge drinking alcohol, some of that damage can be fixed with time and abstinence.

Unfortunately, prolonged alcohol abuse can result in permanently impaired cognitive function. I would have him examined by a medical professional to assess his state.
