: If she’s taking the medication as prescribed, meeting with her doctor regularly, and has been honest with her treatment team about her pain and condition, then you shouldn’t do anything. Having cancer can have an extreme psychological impact on someone, and this could be the reason behind her personality changes as well. Consider speaking to a family counselor together and on a one-on-one basis to find out exactly how you should proceed.

Have you spoken to your girlfriend about her need for the pain pills? Having cancer is usually a legitimate reason to use narcotic pain relievers prescribed by a doctor. It is possible to become chemically dependent on the drugs without forming a psychological dependency. If she sincerely needs the medication for breakthrough cancer pain, then it’s important to be supportive and encourage her comfort.
