  5. What does a methadone clinic do?
Asked: 2018-08-01 17:52:05
There’s a new methadone clinic opening up near my house. I want to volunteer my time to make a difference there, but I’m not sure what to expect. Does anyone have any experience at these clinics?

You would have to talk to the clinic and see if there are any volunteer opportunities available, otherwise you certainly could give your time to a drug abuse prevention or advocacy program. Methadone clinics are designed to dispense methadone, a long-acting opiate that can help those addicted to other opiates. Methadone treatment is used as maintenance treatment while an addict attempts to recover.

It never hurts to ask about volunteer opportunities, but you can also always go to advocacy organizations, as I’m sure they’d have options to help, too. This new methadone clinic near you will dispense methadone, a long-acting opiate that is used to treat those with addictions to heroin or other opiates like prescription painkillers. By essentially replacing the short-acting opiates with methadone, doctors can gradually wean patients off of the drugs without giving them that “high” that makes them so addicted.
