I stumbled across a chart with drug categories and I am trying to understand what the difference between sedatives and depressants are.

Depressant is refering to any drug that causes depression of the CNS. Sedatives like alcohol, benzos and barbs calm you and narcotics are generally opiates.. beats me.

Sedatives are a depressant on the CNS and slows down a brains normal rate of functioning. Im going to have to say sedatives are indeed depressants because they decrease brain activity.
