Can drinking cough syrup kill you?

Someone extremely close to me has gotten into drinking codeine cough syrup. This person intakes substances a lot and in large quantities, can drinking this cough syrup be fatal?

Better to be safe than sorry, if its not prescribed to you I would steer away from using syrup that is a narcotic.
