  5. How to help with alcohol withdrawal?
Asked: 2017-11-27 00:52:47
I’ve watched my mom struggle with alcoholism for most of my childhood and adult life. She finally got everyone together and told us that she’s ready to stop. The doc said that her withdrawals will get pretty bad, and said that she should go to a hospital if she loses consciousness. I’m scared. How can we make this better for her?

It’s good that your entire family is together on this. I’d encourage her to go to the hospital or to a rehab to detox. They can put her on an IV and help her medically detox. If she won’t go, then you definitely need to have someone sleeping there and doing regular checks. She’ll throw up, so keep food in her, and try some Tylenol or ibuprofen is she gets sore. Be careful with benedryl or anything that can make her sleepy.

You’re in a bad spot, and you’re a good kid for sticking with her. Try to make her comfortable and stock the house with Gatorade, good bland food, and keep her drinking water. Make sure that there’s someone with her at all times just in case she seizes or gets too dehydrated.
