I’m trying to explain to my young kids what addiction is. Does anyone have any examples that worked well with their children and helped them understand this disease?

Good for you for trying to talk to your kids about this. I did the same thing, and I told them that addiction is a disease that makes people sick, both in their minds and their bodies. I explained that addiction happens to good people, and that their disease can sometimes make them seem naughty or bad. I also told them it’s important for those with addiction to go to the doctor and get help, and I reminded them that they should be nice and respectful of anyone with this disease.

It’s really great that you are having an open and honest conversation with your children at a young age. I definitely think it helped my family in the long run. I talked to my kids about something they could relate to: the feeling of wanting or needing something, like a toy or an experience, so badly that, no matter how many times your brain (or your parents) told you ‘no,’ you still wanted it really badly. I added that this can happen with bad things like drugs and alcohol, and that it can be really hard for people to make the right choice.
