I am 21 years old and recently started drinking legally. I feel like some of my friends drink all the time, and I wonder if it’s just a phase or if they are addicted. How can I tell?

You’re at a unique point in your life where many of your friends and peers are probably drinking often. That’s in large part because it’s a new and legal experience that still feels like a novelty. After a few months or years, most people your age begin to drink less and less as more life responsibilities come up. Although it’s normal to drink occasionally at this age, extreme, heavy drinking all the time is not normal and a serious cause for concern. If you have friends that go out every single night and get black-out wasted, they may be struggling with inner demons that are fueling their urge to drink.

While many adults your age do enjoy drinking as a social activity, it isn’t normal or healthy to drink every day. If your friends drink heavily and very often, and it has a negative effect on their education, career or personal relationships, then they may be dependent on alcohol.
