  5. Why do people abuse prescription drugs?
Asked: 2018-05-24 04:18:45
I work in a pharmacy, and I’ve literally had two customers screaming at me this week because it was too early to fill their narcotic prescriptions. Am I the only one who thinks this is nuts? I can’t help it, the insurance and state regulations prohibit me from refilling too early. Why are so many people prone to prescription drug abuse?

Prescription drugs are just as addictive as the ones on the street—sometimes more so. There’s no way to tell when someone will end up being addicted to their prescriptions and the more available the drugs, the more that people will abuse them. They can take them for the same reasons that they take illegal drugs. Maybe because of trauma or because they’re predisposed to abuse.

Some people see prescription meds as safe and justified. They feel like a prescription makes it okay for them to take as much as they want, and they don’t realize just how easy it is to get addicted. Some people get the prescriptions because they already have a problem. I guess it’s just a mix between convenience and availability.
