Why do people become addicted to drugs?

Okay, so I have two friends who both used drugs casually when we were teenagers. Now, one of them is like an on the street heroin addict and the other is a successful attorney. Why does addiction effect some and not others?

It really is a disease that happens in the brain. Some people who u se drugs associate it with only the good feelings, and they get dependent on them to keep up the chemical levels in their brains. It also depends on their reasons for using drugs in the first place.
