My brother is a Heroin addict and will get clean for a month or two but go back to using. Why does he relapse? Why can’t he just stay clean?

There is no for sure answer on why your brother is relapsing. He could be having a hard time dealing with his emotions. I would try and get him into a support group like Alcoholics Anonymous. It can help him learn how to deal with his emotions without the use of drugs.

Relapse sucks and I’m so sorry you’re going through this. I know your pain. When you use a drug for so long and go without it, life can get pretty overwhelming at times. Since he was so used to using Heroin when he felt overwhelmed, it is just comforting to go back too. Don’t blame yourself. Try and get him into some support groups or a treatment center. They will both help him learn better coping mechanisms. Best wishes for your family!
