From what I have read on the web - alcohol is a depressant. I find this information interesting because every time I drink I feel really happy.

The term "depressant" means that the substance slows down certain neural areas in the brain. Alcohol triggers those feel-good chemicals in your brain that make you feel happy, which is probably what you're feeling. Alcohol will not help with depression at all. As a depressant, every time you drink you alter your brain chemistry. If you use alcohol to make you feel happy, your body will adjust to this and soon it will need alcohol to function.

Therefore, yes people do drink to help with depression. Now is it the best way to help with depression? No! There is better ways to cope with depression. Consider talking to your doctor, therapist, or spiritual guru to tackle these problems in a healthy manner. You really do not want to be dependent on alcohol to solve your problems.
