Are magic mushrooms illegal?

Got into conversation with someone of a religious upbringing who disclosed the traditions of the culture grown up in and psychedelic mushrooms were included in religious ceremonies. This is beyond interesting and want to understand the laws around mushrooms in America.

Yes magic mushrooms like liberty caps are illegal, its a drug that you could get high off of. You could get addicted to that will give you withdrawals like any other drug. I dont know why anyone would every touch the stuff. Its dangerous to not only you, but to people around you

I know that you can get mushroom spores from spore works but I dont know how legal that is. Some people say that it is legal, some people say it isnt, but I dont think you can sell something online like that that would be illegal.

I know you were curious if shrooms were legal, which I dont believe they are in most countries including the united states, but there are states in our country in which certain spores are legal because they are naturally grown. My concern for you was if you know that little, have you ever considered they could kill you? I googled this question and found some answers on findrehabcenters.org they say no, you cant die from them, but you can die from the stupid decisions that you might make while taking shrooms, they suggest you have a sober friend act as somewhat of a babysitter for you or you and your friends so you don't do something that could kill you.

In most states in the U.S. they are, but in some states I think they are legal. Not sure what ones though. Plus it only makes sense for magic mushrooms to be illegal, it’s a drug other than alcohol.

Shocked to find out that in New Mexico it is not illegal and can actually be grown. Magic mushrooms or psilocybin mushrooms are a schedule I controlled drug here in the states. Mushrooms probably arent banned because of religious reasons.
