How do I know if the new guy I am dating is an alcoholic? My friends think he is, but I am not sure.

Does just about every date involve liquor? If so, he could be an alcoholic. Let's say you two go for a hike, or play tennis, or pop in a movie at your house – does he bring alcohol to each of these events? Do you notice he drinks larger quantities than most others at functions? Does he act stand-offish or anxious until he gets that first drink in him and only then begins to relax? If any of these things are happening with your new guy, it might be time to take a closer look at what your friend are telling you.

A big test is if he is defensive about his drinking. Alcoholics can become prickly when questioned about their drinking. If your guy gets an attitude anytime drinking is discussed, it could be a red flag. Also watch for frequent hangovers, job changes, canceled dates. If he has to have a drink in the morning, even if he jokes about it while doing it, it points strongly to him being an alcoholic.
