What is an addiction specialist?

I am watching my girlfriend fade away in front of my eyes and I don’t know what to do. Someone mentioned that I should go to an addiction specialist, but will a normal doctor do the same?

An addiction specialist is kind of like a more qualified doctor, they just know more about addiction, so they are better at seeing the signs and helping decide what is best for an addict.

Any registered doctor can help but an addiction specialist is going to have more knowledge and has specialized in the area of substance misuse, and can probably understand more of the behaviors and needs your girlfriend has.
