What is an enabler to an addict?

My Mom keeps telling me that I am an enabler to my boyfriend who is an addict, and that I should leave him. I’m not really sure what an addict enabler is, can someone tell me what it is, so I know what to look out for?

The worst thing I did as an enabler was to blame his addiction on other people. It was always someone else fault he was addicted to drugs. You have to hold your boyfriend responsible for his actions.

As someone who enabled my spouse with her addiction, I can tell you how easy it is to do so without realizing it. I often overlooked her negative behavior. I would put her before myself everytime, and I would lie to people for her behavior. It was the worst think I ever did for her. I think in this case, Mom probably knows best.
