I’m concerned about my son, who has been smoking marijuana for several years. I’ve heard time and time again that this is a gateway drug to harder, more addictive substances. Should I be worried that he’ll become addicted to something stronger, like heroin?

It’s reasonable for you to be concerned. It truly depends on the individual, but in many cases drug addicts start out by smoking marijuana and then venture down the path of more severe addictions. Of course, that isn’t always the case, and your son may never try anything more dangerous than marijuana. It could go either way, but seeing as he already uses illicit substances, you may want to have an open and honest conversation with him about your concerns and see where his head is at.

I understand your worry, as I was in a similar boat. My son assured me time and time again that he was just smoking weed, and in what felt like the blink of an eye he was addicted to heroin. But you just never know, maybe your son would be fine and recognizes the dangers of other drugs. I would try your best to have an open, non-judgmental conversation with him where you tell him about your fears and let him know he can always come to you to talk or for support.
