  5. Who does drug addiction affect?
Asked: 2018-08-06 05:17:03
I come from a wealthy family, and I’ve found myself in a disagreement with my father. One of my friends has developed an addiction to pain pills, and I’ve been there to support her. My dad is not happy about this and says I should cut her off, as drug addiction doesn’t affect people like us. I couldn’t disagree with him more. What should I do?

It’s so sad to hear that your father is judgmental when it comes to drug abuse. Addiction knows no bounds and does not discriminate, regardless of wealth or family background. Even the wealthiest, most well-off families can be torn apart by the addiction. In short, addiction can affect anyone and everyone. I would stand up for yourself, and your friend and other addicts, by sticking true to your beliefs and reminding him that drug addiction is a disease that can affect people of all ages and backgrounds. I would be firm and say that you will continue to support your friend, and if your dad doesn’t agree with that, then it’s his problem, not yours.

It’s disheartening to hear that some people still believe that only the poor and impoverished minorities take drugs. I would tell your father that anyone, regardless of income, ethnicity, or family background, can become addicted to drugs, and that you will continue to be by your friend’s side. If he doesn’t like it, then that’s too bad. Please do not give in to your dad’s misguided way of thinking, as it most certainly is not true. Drug addiction knows no limits.
