  5. Who does Substance Abuse affect?
Asked: 2018-05-18 13:52:05
My little girl is only 7, but she’s very smart and perceptive. She must have heard the term “substance abuse” on the news, and now she’s asking if that could affect her. What should I tell her?

I would recommend telling her that, if she’s careful and knows about the dangers, she can prevent or stop it from happening to her when she’s older! I would explain that substance abuse is part of addiction, a disease that affects people of all ages from teenagers to senior citizens. I’d also add that it doesn’t matter where you’re from or how much money your family has; substance abuse can affect anyone.

My daughter was very curious too, and she was always asking questions like this. I told her “hopefully substance abuse is something you never have to go through when you get older. Some people deal with bad or scary things in their lives by taking drugs or drinking alcohol. These substances aren’t good for you and can make you sick. That’s what substance abuse is, when people keep putting things in their bodies that make them sick and could really hurt them. It’s hard for them to stop doing it, because their bodies become addicted to it.” I hope this helps you have an open conversation with your daughter! It certainly worked for me.
