  5. Why do opiates cause withdrawal?
Asked: 2018-09-05 10:47:49
I’ve been taking painkillers that were supposed to be for surgery for months. I’ve gone to three different doctors with different complaints to keep getting them—mainly because I’m afraid of getting sick when I stop. Why do these drugs cause withdrawals?

opioids work with natural chemicals in your brain, and when you take them for a long time you get chemically dependent on them. As soon as you stop taking them, your brain sees that something’s wrong and makes your body feel sick to let you know that your chemical needs aren’t being met.

You have withdrawals because your body is so used to the euphoric effects of the drugs that it needs them to feel normal. Once you stop taking them, the chemical levels in your brain get out of whack, and you think there’s something wrong until the levels stabilize again.
