I’m confused you are prescribed a drug to help with pain, but then you become addicted to it? Why are opiates so addictive?

Those opiates really mess with your brain. It makes you want the drug, you can’t think about anything else until you get more drugs.

Some types of opiates create over 100 times more endorphins than the body. This has such a huge impact on the brain and nerve cells. So your brain is craving those endorphins your missing out on when you are not taking opiates.
